Can anyone become a Clubhouse member? Must I be referred by a doctor and/or another member?

Yes, typically, if you are an adult living with mental illness (e.g., schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, depression, major personality disorder, etc.), you are eligible for membership. Our Clubhouse will have an application and referral process and self-referrals will also be welcomed. Clubhouses are very friendly places and we encourage you to continue checking this website for our opening date in Victoria.

What is a Connections Place: Is it a private club?

Connections Place will ve a local community centre that caters to local people living with mental illness. These people, once registered are known as "clubhouse members” who can develop friendships and opportunities to work together and find structured guidance to get help with needed services such as housing and healthcare as well as help transitioning back to work or back to school. The Connections Place Clubhouse is not a treatment centre or a mental health service but rather a safe place to develop friendships, self-respect and motivation.

What is the age of a Connections Place Clubhouse member?

Members must be at least 18 years old however there is no upper age limit. The Victoria Clubhouse will have many opportunities for all members to be involved and a variety of things to do despite any age gaps.

What is the cost of becoming a Connections Place Clubhouse member?

Membership at the Victoria Connections Place Clubhouse will be free to anyone living with a mental illness.

What is a staff member?

A Clubhouse staff member is a paid employee of the Clubhouse. Clubhouse staff members have specific job responsibilities related to the day-to-day operation of the Clubhouse and helping members with their individual recoveries and/or life goals.

Are doctors available at Connections Place Clubhouse for therapy and medications?

No: there are no medical, clinical or treatment services at the Connections Place Clubhouse. However, our Clubhouse will help members locate and gain access to the medical and other social services they may need.

How much time do I have to spend at Connections Place?

Membership and participation at the Clubhouse is completely voluntary. Each individual member decides how much and how often they wish to be involved.

What can I do at Connections Place Clubhouse? What activities go on here and must I participate?

There will be many things to do at the Clubhouse. The different types of activities will be divided in to the following categories:
• A Work Day: will include many projects that are important to Clubhouse members. The work day will include opportunities to do things like clerical and computer work, telephone work, food service, building maintenance and clean up, research, audio visual production projects, newsletter preparation, budget management, Clubhouse administration, member transportation services, mental health advocacy, etc.
• An Employment Program: will involve how the Clubhouse helps members get and keep paid jobs.
• An Education Program: will involve how the Clubhouse helps members enrol in and complete education programs, including College and other degree programs.
• An Evening, Weekend and Holiday Social and Recreational Program: will include activities where Clubhouse members and staff have fun together and build friendships.
Our Clubhouse will have low-cost meals, meaningful work, employment and education programs, and fun.
Members may participate in as much or as little as they want to in any of the Clubhouse activities. There will be no requirements about the amount of participation. At Clubhouses, we recognize that members come to us at various points in their lives and recovery. One member might want to come to the Clubhouse every day and be involved in many activities, while another may only want to come and get help with employment. Some members may just want to come once in a while until they are ready to do more. Each member determines his or her own level of participation

Can Connections Place Clubhouse provide me with a place to live?

No one will live at the Connections Place Clubhouse, but the Clubhouse will try and find a member a safe, decent and affordable home.

How long does membership in the Connections Place Clubhouse last?

Connections Place Clubhouse membership will not have any time limits. Membership will be considered for life, and once someone is a member, he or she can return to the Clubhouse after any length of absence.

Volunteering

Can I volunteer for Connections Place?

Yes: We are always looking for volunteers. However as you will be working alongside vulnerable people the law requires that a background criminal check must be conducted first. We are currently looking for people who may have knowledge in the following areas: - Grant-writing - Fundraising - Marketing
