A Christmas of Isolation and Sadness

The Christmas season is quickly approaching. Shops and businesses are decorating and even some homes. Social gatherings with lovely food, friends and family are the norm for the next month.

We Need to Reduce the Number of People who Need Emergency Services

It is almost four years since I began this Clubhouse journey. Support is growing but the actual Clubhouse is not established yet. Just a few miles away is exactly what we need in this community of ours to guide people away from isolation, jail, hospitalizations and suicide.

A Letter From a Connections Place Supporter

I am very excited to hear about the efforts being made to bring a Clubhouse project to Victoria.  As a mother of a fine young man who suffers from mental illness, I speak with the full experience of 37 years.  (I typed “tears” first instead of “years", which isn’t a mistake, really).

Connections Place November Event

Thank you to those who attended our event last month at Uptown and also to those who wanted to come but could not make it.  Your  collective support is extremely important as we move forward with bringing an Accredited Clubhouse International to our community.  Mental illness is a community issue and it will take unified community engagement to result in a community solution.

The Problems Parents Experience

It is a big subject and a difficult one to cover in a few minutes. I was asked to speak to this at our November 17th meeting and I spoke about the lack of help when you leave the hospital – you are told if there is a problem to return to emergency. Not something a parent likes to hear. You want to hear what is available to help your loved one get back on their feet.

Hello There - Welcome to Connections Place!

We hope you enjoy taking a tour of “Connections Place”. Our Clubhouse is a virtual one right now – but the goal is to make it a true Clubhouse International. We will join with the other 330 Clubhouses worldwide in changing the world of mental health. We will be a community-based centre with a dignified, respectful space for the work units that will include a kitchen and seating area.

The Wall: What is Happening to Prevent Mental Wellness

Establishing a Clubhouse International is our main goal; another is to educate our community to understand that it’s a tough road for someone struggling with a mental disorder. With a physical illness – it’s easy to explain – there is an outpouring of sympathy and understanding.  The wall goes up with mental illness and it’s time for the wall to come down.

Clubhouse International Housing

When visiting Alexandra Court, the 24 unit apartment complex owned by Pathways Clubhouse in Richmond, I was immediately impressed with the community atmosphere.  Pride is very evident as the building is spotless - members are very proud of their home.

Moms Like Us, Blog by Victoria Mayor, Lisa Helps

A month and a half ago, I had a call from a group of moms who all have adult children who live with mental illnesses. I met with them at City Hall rather than at my regular coffee shop location because they wanted privacy and confidence.
